A school designed around how children grow

A school that changed as children changed

HLC exists for one simple reason. Children grow fast, and school must grow with them.

We stay small by choice so every child is known. This helps us notice who a learner is becoming, not only what they score.

Over the years, our work has been recognised in different ways. But the real proof is quieter. It is in the daily life of classrooms, relationships, and the kinds of graduates we send out.

A conversation that captures our beliefs

This is a long form interview with Mr. Naveen and Ms.Raaji at the Madras Management Association, recorded after they received the Uncommon Leader award in 2019.

If you want the spirit behind HLC in one place, start here.

Where we began

HLC began in 1995 as Headstart Nursery and Primary School, founded by Sudha Mahesh. She wrote books for Cambridge and her work reached millions of learners.

The school later grew into HLC International School, and the first graduating batch completed school in 2009. We continue to be a Cambridge accredited school, while keeping our focus on childhood, character, and fit.

A few anchors of trust

Some families look for a quick set of markers before they go deeper. Here are ours.

  • India’s first Ashoka Changemaker School
  • Cambridge accredited school
  • Graduates since 2009
  • Founded in 1995

Leadership and service beyond the campus

We learn from the wider education ecosystem and we try to contribute to it as well.

Mr. Naveen serves on the board of NalandaWay Foundation, and is Vice President of the Tamilnadu Association of Cambridge Schools (TACS).

What we protect

We protect childhood. We protect curiosity. We protect dignity.

That is why we design school differently at different ages, and why we do not turn school into a race.

Some schools begin with a philosophy and build the classroom around it. We begin with the child and build the classroom around what that child needs at this stage.

If this feels like your kind of school

Admissions is designed for fit. We begin with an application, and we invite families for a dialogue when there is potential alignment and seat possibility.
